What Do You Do?

Why is it that when I respond to what I do for a living with "I am a chiropractor!" there is need for that person to then grab his or her neck or back and say "Oh Doc, I need ya!" ? I wonder what happens to proctologists when they tell people what they do for a living.

With your permission I would like to tell you about the truth of chiropractic and how as a society we have not understood what a true gift it is.

There was a great philosopher named Hippocrates who once stated "we are either growing or dying." Not to be outdone Confucius stated, "our lives are like that of an egg, we are either growing or decaying."

See, everyday we are exposed to chemical, physical and mental stressors in our environment that continually bombard our system.

It is the job of our nerve system to detect these stressors, interpret them, and help our body to either adapt to them and continue our growth or to shrink from them and to stop growing while in a survival or protective mode.

In essence, we are both growing and dying each day and it is simply that one will predominate over the other. One is an upward spiral of growth leading to fulfillment and ease the other is a downward spiral of decay leading to death.

Our bodies have an inborn intelligence that is called innate intelligence. This intelligence runs, regulates, heals and grows the body to our fullest potential allowing us to reach our purpose in life.

There are many things you have to accept in understanding the full breadth of chiropractic. Either we are on this earth from the grace of a higher consciousness or we are simply the random assimilation of organic substance that has evolved over many years making us nothing more than a higher order of mud.

If you have a live person and a dead person side by side, what is the difference? They both have all the same stuff, the same potential for life, however in chiropractic it is the live one that expresses an innate intelligence or life force.

See most people look at the body being run and regulated by the brain, but what runs the brain? There are those that think genes dictate life, but we know that they turn off and on regularly even mutating and adapting, so I ask, "what turns them on or off?"

For a hundred years chiropractors have been saying that there is an inborn intelligence that is perfect inside of us that continually gives 100% of the information we need to run, regulate, grow, heal and flourish. That ill health, dis-ease, lack of potential arises from a lack of expression of this intelligence.

This lack of expression leads to incoordination of the body or a lack of a body's ability to comprehend itself in its own environment.

That leads to a lack of the body being able to adapt to outsides stressors and this causes a loss of function, breakdown of tissues and is a downward spiral of decay and ultimately death.

If we look at the full expression of innate intelligence being the fullest expression of life as light we can look at the lack of this expression of intelligence as decay or
dis-ease and as darkness.

So, how do you remedy darkness? You can study darkness, examine it, qualify it, be aware of it, focus on it but the only solution to the removal of it is to add light.

Chiropractic understands this premise and does not look to cure disease, address disease or diagnose disease. We understand disease for what it truly is, a lack state, one that arises only in the absence of the fullest expression of life.

Chiropractic is the detection and correction of interference with the expression of this intelligence in relation to the spine called the subluxation.

The primary system for the expression of this innate intelligence is over our nerve system and being that our spinal cord is surrounded and protected by spinal bones called vertebrae, this important relationship is how chiropractors became synonymous with backs.

It is truly that chiropractic deals with the innate intelligence and the nervous system and is not a doctor of the spine, especially not spinal disorders, decay or disease.

As a chiropractor the only conclusion that I can with any degree of certainty make is that your body is better off with a clear nerve system than one with interference. As a chiropractor we are trained and the only practitioners who have the philosophy and the technique to find that interference and to assist in correcting it.

Anything that is beyond the detection and correction of the subluxation process is usually of the allopathic or medical mindset that we are not whole and need something outside ourselves to help us to grow.

This first thing that is assumed we need is an outside intelligence that looks at us to tell us what we need, be it ultrasound, electrical stim., pharmaceuticals, supplements, etc. We need to go back to our original thought process and question "if there is a practitioner who directs the energy where they think it needs to go, how does that honor an individuals inborn innate intelligence?" Doesn't innate intelligence know what is needed, where and how much?

It is that in our society where sitting for 5 minutes in a drive through seems like an eternity. A society where commercials bombard you 5-7 times in three minutes and that problems are resolves in three 8-minute segments on a television program.

To then have someone shift and to comprehend that all of life including healing is a process and that being under care is also a lifetime process can be a challenge. You might want to ask yourself if you start to exercise when do you get to a point when you can stop, how about brushing your teeth, and eating healthy foods? You can always choose to stop doing those things and that is not necessarily a bad thing it is just not congruent with the fullest expression of your life's potential.

So chiropractic care is a process that gives its greatest rewards over a lifetime and starts with getting checked to see how much the subluxation is interfering with your nerve system and your life.

Many automatically say, "yeah, but I feel fine" however, symptoms are the last thing to show up in a process and therefore the worst possible way to judge your life's expression. We all know of someone who had dropped dead from a heart attack and never showed the smallest sign of that process yet we know that cardiovascular disease is a process that occurs over decades. Diabetes is said to be at epidemic proportions mostly due to there being no obvious signs until the process has gone rampant for years. Look at tooth decay, a process that occurs for years by the time you feel any pain or sensitivity. Haven't you heard of someone getting checked out and to their surprise they had a 99% blockage in their coronary arteries only to get immediate and drastic open heart surgery with basically no sign or symptoms before that?

Please understand that these things are just an example of processes that are a function of our fundamental disconnection with the understanding of life, health and being out of touch with our self.

These disease processes are all low end on the spectrum and in reality are not what I am talking about when I speak of possibility. It is not enough to live just not to die, to be alive with no symptoms or to never need a surgery. I do not believe that is why God put us here on this planet. I believe we all have a purpose and we are all meant to flourish, grow and reach our optimum potentials. You see you cannot be in fear and love at the same time; you cannot be in survival mode and growth at the same time. I know we are meant to live in love and growth and honor the gift of grace always, all of the time.

To me, it is impossible to accomplish this with a nerve system that is compromised. One that allows a little less life in us each and every day that it remains. So, from a person who has given thousands of adjustments, read tons of books, tons of research articles, listened to dozens of tapes and lecturers, please get your spine checked.

Get checked for subluxations; get your families checked, your friends, your loved ones or anyone you care about. Even the people you don't care about, mention it to them, maybe it is a subluxation that is preventing them from their fullest expression of love and happiness, you never know with a clear nerve system anything and everything may become possible.

The Gambler

Now Every gambler knows that the secret to surviving
Is knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep
Cause every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep
-Kenny Rogers, The Gambler

I was waiting in line at the store a while back. Standing in front of me was a woman from Illinois and she was having a conversation with the cashier.

"Ooh! You are soooo lucky you're from Illinois, what with all those riverboats to gamble on! Why, we have to take an over 2 hour bus ride to Atlantic City, NJ if we want to play!"

"I NEVER gamble with my hard earned money - No Maam! Not Me!" exclaimed the woman in front of me. "I may eat too much, drink a little too much and even have a smoke every now and then, but risk my money? NO WAY!"

As you have just found out, this lady's priorities are just a bit out of whack. She rates her money as more important than her health!

Unfortunately, this attitude is not all that uncommon. Many people put their health as a secondary priority [if even that high] in their lives, and I think I know why.

You see most of us have been raised in the medical mindset. What I mean by this is that most of us were brought up to believe that health is something that is not really up to us. We think that we are just pawns in the hands of Mother Nature and that even if we take steps to be healthy, it won't matter in the long run. We think that our natural tendency is to be sick.

It is precisely this attitude that the woman standing next to me was demonstrating. But I ask you to think about all of the things that are important to you in your life. Consider all of the people you want to share your love and special talents with. Reflect upon what you think your mission and purpose in life are and then ask yourself one simple question:

Can you achieve the level of success you desire in all the areas of your life you just thought about without your health?

I believe that each of us does have a purpose in our lives. And, I believe that our bodies are the "vehicles" we have been given through which to express our purpose and potential. If we are not physically, mentally, socially and spiritually as whole as possible, we cannot achieve the results we desire or deserve.

Part of this lifestyle of progressive wholeness must include making sure there is no interference to the full expression of the magical and divine perfection that resides within you. We chiropractors call this inner wisdom your innate intelligence. It is the life force that runs, regulates, heals and grows you from conception until death and it uses your nerve system for communication between your brain and your body.

If you encounter any physical, chemical or emotional stress that is beyond your internal resistance, your body develops what we call a subluxation. This produces a downward spiral in your health and vitality that results from less than 100% expression of your innate intelligence. The chiropractic adjustment restores the flow of Life between your brain and all the cells of your body and allows you to continually move in the direction of full expression of your purpose and potential in life.

However, this is a teamwork venture! My job is to introduce a force that your spinal muscles can use to make the adjustment that restores the flow of life, and your job is to create a lifestyle that continually raises your level of internal resistance to outside stresses.

But the only way anyone will consistently take the steps necessary to live this health-creating lifestyle is to first realize that our natural state is NOT to be sick, but to be outrageously healthy and happy! This happens automatically and progressively when we consistently have a clear and balanced nerve system - a nerve system that allows for the full expression of our Innate Intelligence!

So, don't gamble with your health - you don't need to! God has placed inside of you everything you need to be healthy and happy! But even more than that - he has given you everything you need to be whole! And if you do your part, you will see that what you have inside of you is every gamblers dream - a "sure thing!"

Feeding The Wolves

There is an old Native American tale about an elderly chief who was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, "A fight is going on inside of me. It is a terrible battle and it is between two wolves."

He continued, "One wolf is evil - he is fear, anger, envy, judgment, weakness, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, lies, competition, and separateness. The other wolf is good - he is love, understanding, joy, acceptance, strength, pride, sharing, compassion, wisdom, truth, cooperation, and unity. This same fight is going on inside of you and inside every other person too."

The children thought about this for a minute and then one of them asked the chief, "Grandfather, which wolf will win?" The wise old man looked at her with love in his eyes and said simply, "The one you feed!"

We all encounter bad situations, experiences, and things on a regular basis. And yes, some of them can really get under your skin (if you let them). But, the message in the Native American parable above is an important one to remember.

When it comes to health and life, which wolf do you choose to feed? The chiropractic wolf that will help people remember the miracle that has been placed inside of them and help them express it as completely as possible, or the allopathic medical wolf that tries to convince us that we are all defective, weak and incapable of living life to the fullest without remedies, drugs, surgery or some other outside-in approach?

As I've quoted before, "You cannot escape something you are giving your attention to." This is true! The fact that you are giving any attention at all to what you don't want will cause it to keep showing up in your life! Feed the vision you wish to see instead! Spend time each day visualizing with passion, everything you want your future to be.

Remember, how do you remove the darkness from a room? You turn on a light! You don't worry about removing the darkness because as light comes, darkness automatically leaves - the light displaces the darkness. In the same way, the more time we spend educating people on chiropractic and life truths and the more time we spend living these truths ourselves, the less room there will be for any alternative to exist.

So, will you now be part of the problem or part of the solution? Decide right here, right now which wolf will win this fight. We all have the power to choose the winner, and each day our thoughts, words and actions are the food that will ultimately decide our collective fate.

There need not be a "wolf-fight." Simply decide that you will no longer give any energy to what you don't want to see. As I stated above, you cannot escape something you are giving your attention to. Let us all choose today, to "have no escape" from the world of peace and joy that awaits us when the world is living in truth.
