"Hi Patty! I haven't seen you for almost a month - great to see you again!" I greeted my practice member as she came in to see me early last week. "Yep, it's been a while but I wanted to wait until I was done with all of my yard work and raking before I came in to see you," she answered. "Why is that?" I inquired. "Well, I didn't want to come in when I knew I still had work to do that could mess me up!" she responded. Although I don't hear this kind of remark all that frequently anymore, it has popped up often enough recently that I wanted to address it.
Many people are stuck in thinking that the purpose of the adjustment is to eliminate something. That is, they believe the reason to get checked is that they might have something they shouldn't have, like pain, spasm, inflammation or interference in the nerve system (a subluxation).
This thinking is actually kind of backwards. It's not that something is present in your body that shouldn't be there. The truth is that you are MISSING something you need in order to be healthy and happy and to fully express life! Allow me to explain this in a way that is very easy to understand.
Light is energy. When it is present, we know it. We also know when it is absent because we experience what we call darkness. But the truth is that darkness is not a thing in and of itself, it is really the lack of something else! When we have only a little light energy present, we call the room DIM. When we have more light energy, we call it BRIGHT. And when we have lots of light energy present, we say it is BRILLIANT!
Similarly, heat is energy. When it is present, we know it. We also know when it is not present because we experience what we call coldness. But the truth is that coldness is not a thing in and of itself, it is really the absence of something else! When we have only a small amount heat energy present, we say it feels COOL. When we have more heat energy, we say it's WARM. And when we have lots of heat energy being expressed, we call it HOT!
You also have an energy within your body that animates you - that is, it makes you ALIVE. We can call this energy your Life Force. When you are not expressing any Life Energy, we say you are DEAD. When you are expressing only a little of this Life Force, we can call it being SICK. If there is a little more, we say you are HEALTHY or WELL, and if you fully express your Life Force, we say you are WHOLE or at your OPTIMUM POTENTIAL!
When you are fully expressing your Life Energy, your internal resistance to physical, chemical and emotional stresses is very high. It allows you to not only handle (adapt to) these things, but you consistently heal and you actually have the capacity to get the most out of every effort you give to life!
The correct thing to do is not to wait until you have encountered something that messes you up, but to instead make sure your nerve system is clear before, during and after every activity or stress. Keep yourself clear ALL THE TIME by living a lifestyle that actively CREATES health and by getting checked every week or two by your chiropractor. And, if you know you will be, are or have been exposed to more challenges than usual, get checked again! That way you will continually GROW in every way!
It has been said that good things come to those who wait - I beg to differ!

What does a chiropractor do?
After analyzing your spine, your chiropractor introduces a sufficient force into your body to set the subluxated (misaligned) vertebra into motion. Once the bone is in motion, the muscles and ligaments of the spine work to put the bone into its ideal position.
The adjustment or force introduced by the chiropractor is very simple, yet requires skill and accuracy. Anyone can move bones. Everyone knows someone who can "crack his neck." Unfortunately, that takes no great skill. The skill and training required to locate misaligned vertebrae and to know when and where to make an adjustment makes the chiropractor unique.
All patients do not necessarily receive the same adjustment. Through a spinal examination, the chiropractor determines which of the twenty?four spinal vertebrae are subluxated and in which direction. The adjustment is then given accordingly. It has been found that because of anatomical factors and the similarity of living habits among people, certain areas of the spine are more prone to subluxation than others, such as the upper neck area.
Chiropractic techniques may vary but the objective is the same - to correct vertebral subluxations and restore more of the expression of life to the body.
How often do I need to be adjusted?
The simplest answer to that question is, "As often as your spine becomes subluxated." The problem is that you cannot know whether or not you need an adjustment.
You can guess that after falling down a flight of stairs you may well have subluxated your spine, but from day to day you have no way of knowing, unless your chiropractor examines your spine. How often anyone needs to be adjusted varies from individual to individual, depending upon age, occupation, lifestyle, health, exercise, and many other factors. This is why a schedule of reexaminations will be made according to your particular need.
Why doesn't the spine stay in place?
The spine is not an inanimate object. It is a living organ which is constantly in motion. When the first adjustment is given, a vertebra is set back into place that may have been subluxated for months, years, even decades. It has become accustomed to being in the wrong position. The muscles and ligaments that should hold the vertebra in the correct position are stretched and weakened. They may have been deprived of their nerve supply for many years. Due to this weakness, the bone slips back out of place again, perhaps the very same day. As the spine is continually adjusted, the vertebra spends more and more time in the proper position. Consequently, the muscles and other tissues strengthen and are better able to hold the bone in place.
Regular chiropractic care is essential for optimum health. A properly functioning nerve system enables the body to reach its full potential in restoring and maintaining health as well as enhancing other areas of life such as job performance, academic excellence and athletic accomplishment.
When a vertebra misaligns to the degree that it interferes with the proper function of the nerve system (subluxates), the inborn, self?regulating mechanism of the body cannot function as it should. This results in a decrease in the quality of life. Chiropractors correct these subluxations.
As the holidays approach each year, many people begin to feel overwhelmed. It is not unusual to feel this way because it is the end of the year, and the end of one year always causes us to focus our thoughts on what is likely to happen in the year which is about to begin.
It is at this time that we all seem to take "inventory" of what we have created in our lives up to this point. It is also the time we most severely tend to berate ourselves for not being and doing and having more in each area of our lives. This thinking is what tends to bring on the feelings of overwhelm, depression and inadequacy to move confidently and joyously into the future.
The problem here is really that we have simply taken on a false belief system. That false belief system is that the past equals the future. This has in fact been the case in many people's lives...but it doesn't have to be!
You see, the biggest mistake people make is that they are either ignorant of the law of attraction or they have forgotten that it applies to every thought, word and action that we express. Let me explain what I mean by this.
You may have heard the phrase, "Some see the glass as half empty and some see it as half full." The truth is that we live in a DYNAMIC Universe, and nothing ever stays the way it is. Everything is always changing and moving in one direction or the other. So the truth is this:
What does this have to do with feeling overwhelmed and the fact that the future does not have to equal the past? Well, when we all take our end of the year inventories of our lives, if we tend to beat ourselves up over what IS, rather than expressing our gratitude for what is and looking forward to what will be. In other words, we are really seeing the glass as being in the process of emptying - and we will attract to ourselves more of the same things we are disappointed in with our current situations!
This is because the Universal Law of Attraction says that whatever we are expressing, whether in our thoughts, our words or our actions, will always attract more of the same to ourselves. In other words, you ALWAYS get what you think about - if you think about what you want, you get more of it, and if you think about what you DON'T want, you get more of that!
Jesus taught this in the Bible when he said, "To him that has shall be given, and from him that has not shall be taken what little he does have." Jesus understood completely that whomever focuses upon what is good and right and looks for the lessons for growth even in those things that are not desired will always get more things to be grateful for ("TO HIM THAT HAS...shall be given...")! And, he also taught us that when we focus on what's wrong or missing in our lives, we will actually have MORE of what's wrong or missing ("...FROM HIM THAT HAS NOT...shall be taken what little he does have.")!
So what is the key to moving progressively and consistently away from thinking about everything that is not perfect yet in our lives and focusing instead upon deliberately creating the kind of life we have always known in our hearts we desire and deserve?
Gratitude is the bridge to progressively and consistently manifesting all that you desire and deserve in each area of your life. Gratitude is the one and only cure for overwhelm and it is the great secret every master of his or her own destiny has known and applied.
Some may scoff at the idea that changing the focus of your thoughts could change your life so completely in so many ways. Well, this is true for them! Remember, you can't escape something you are giving your attention to! Are those the people you should take advice from? Listen to your heart...your heart knows what is true.
To help remind you how much you should be grateful for:
-If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million that will not survive the week.
-If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.
-If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are more blessed than over three billion people in the world.
-If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of this world.
-If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.
-If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.
-If you can hold somebody's hand, hug them, or even touch them on the shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer God's healing touch.
-If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing, in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all.
-You live among the top few percent of all the world's people. Feel your power, and be thankful! Instead of stressing, see how good you already have it, and appreciate the unlimited potential you have to make things even better.
In this holiday season, let's remind ourselves of all we have to be grateful for -- our health, our families, our work, and the freedoms we too often take for granted. You know what actions to take. Trust your heart, and you will always have more to be grateful for. Have a great Holiday, count your blessings, and remind everyone else how blessed we all are.
"Hey Kathryn, it's great to see you!" I greeted her as she came in for her regular weekly check up. "Something's not quite right today Doc," she replied. "I just don't quite have my usual amount of get up and go." "We'll get you going again," I replied, "lay down on the table and relax." Kathryn lay down on the table and asked, "You know what stinks?" "What's that?" I answered. "Well, I never used to notice when things weren't right until they were REALLY not right. But now - since I've been getting adjusted and I am clear so often, I seem to notice when things are off even a tiny bit."
This is something that many people notice after being under a regular program of chiropractic care. At first, it may in fact seem that this kind of sensitivity stinks as Kathryn declared. But there are a few important reasons why this phenomenon occurs. The first is relatively simple to understand and has been experienced by most students (especially men) that have ever lived in a college dorm room.
You move in, start classes, begin studying and partying with your friends and progressively over the next few weeks, without you even noticing, an incredible mess accumulates in the room. Of course, you're too busy to take care of this even though it bothers you considerably. So, you keep on with your activities and after awhile, it seems not to bother you as much anymore. In fact, you can even throw things right on the floor without really noticing a change. You have lowered your standard of cleanliness.
The same thing can occur in your body. Things slowly begin going wrong, and over time you learn to just live with them. In fact, little problems can continue to accumulate without you even noticing any major change. You have lowered your standard of health.
Of course, once you begin living in a clean dorm room again you notice right away when something gets messy. In the same way, once you have raised your standard and you have begun living at a higher level of health, you will notice more easily when something is not quite right, even if it is a very small thing that isn't right. Does it stink to find out that you have been living at a higher level of health - that you have raised your standard?
There is another, more important reason why people more easily notice when things begin to function at a less than optimal level once they have begun consistently expressing a higher level of health and life. When you have interference in the lines of communication between your brain and body (a subluxation), you are not as able to tell how you actually feel because you are not fully connected.
Getting and staying re-connected is the whole purpose of the chiropractic adjustment process. Once you are re-connected, you will necessarily notice with greater sensitivity all of the things that are going on in your body and in every other area of your life.
These two things - living at a higher standard and being more fully connected - are not things to be upset about. On the contrary, THEY ARE TO BE CELEBRATED! Experiencing a progressively fuller expression of life is after all what our Creator likely has in mind for each one of us! Anything less than that would, well...stink!
