"I Don't Believe in Chiropractic" ("Yes you do")

Have you ever heard anyone use this as a reason why they would not want to have a chiropractic evaluation? If so, then I would have to say that you are not alone. I have heard this sentiment numerous times. When I hear these words spoken, I have to ask myself, "What is it that they don't 'believe' in?"

Do you 'believe' in chiropractic? Well let's find out. Four simple questions will show you that you do.

Question 1: Do you 'believe' that your brain's responsibility is to control and coordinate all of your bodily functions? If you do, then you are in agreement with every physiology textbook that has been published.

Question 2: Do you 'believe' that your brain sends out information, in the way of chemicals and brain waves or messages, over the nerve system to control and coordinate every physiological function you perform? Again, if you do then you are in agreement with every medical textbook ever written on the subject.

Question 3: Do you 'believe' that a disruption of the information flow over the nerve system causes a state of imbalance and threatens your health? If so, you are in agreement with anyone who has ever studied the Central Nerve System.

Question 4: Do you 'believe' that removing any obstruction to nerve flow would improve your health and your brain's ability to control and coordinate all of your bodily functions? If you do then you agree with all the published research on the topic.

If you answered yes to all those questions you DO believe in chiropractic. Chiropractic's goal is to check your spine for vertebral subluxations, which are misaligned spinal bones that are causing an interference to the proper function of your nerve system. Subluxations occur in everyone due to physical, chemical, and emotional stresses that we are all exposed to daily. When subluxations are found, chiropractors then perform spinal adjustment to allow more normal function and alignment of the bones of your spine, which helps restore your ability to regulate and maintain proper nerve system function. In other words, it helps re-establish and maintain the CONNECTION between your brain and your body in order to maximize the expression of Life Energy in your body. When this occurs, your body functions at its best in everything it does.

Pretty simple, isn't it? See when you really understand the concept behind how chiropractic works, then you realize that you do 'believe' in chiropractic.

While results will vary from person to person, the most common benefits of regular chiropractic care are: more energy; improved health; clearer thinking, concentration, and memory; better ability to handle stress; improved physical performance; better sleep; greater value from exercise and nutritional choices; more balanced body chemistry; increased income earning capacity; improved relationships; better digestion; etc. ... basically a greater enjoyment of Life.

So then why do so many people use the "I don't believe in chiropractic" excuse? Good question. I can only surmise that people don't understand what chiropractors do so they just default to the "I don't believe" stance.

In the end, this is quite sad because they do believe in what chiropractors do; they just don't realize it. This means they may never experience the benefits that chiropractic has to offer because of a misunderstanding. All too many people will continue to live with health challenges and use drugs and resort to surgery when that may not even be necessary. It doesn't have to be that way!

If you already know this information, send this article to someone you care about that may not.

Too Much of a Good Thing

The people living in the Midwest have been in the midst of what meteorologists call a mini-drought for most of the summer as they have been without much rain at all. So when the remnants of Hurricane Ike made their way toward Chicago, they were happy about the coming rain. It would be just what their trees, flowers and grass so desperately needed. Little did they know what was in store for them, as over a period of three days they received nearly fourteen inches of rain. The flooding in and around Chicago and the suburbs was incredible - the worst in over 35 years. A colleague of mine returned home from a trip to a prospective college with his daughter to find nearly eighteen inches of water in his basement, and he was very lucky compared to many of his neighbors.

This illustrates just how devastating too much of a good thing like rain can be. What does this have to do with health and chiropractic? Many people who are under chiropractic care have been told that they have lost normal function in their spines, and that this has caused a subsequent loss of connection between their brains and their bodies. But, some mistakenly think that this always causes a decrease in the flow of energy through their nerves, and a decrease in the function of some part of their body. This is not always true. In fact, very many times, this lack of normal communication actually causes an increased flow of energy along your nerves. You may be thinking, but isn't energy a good thing? Isn't it impossible to get too much of this particular good thing? The problem is that too much energy along your nerves can also cause the excessive function of organs and other structures.

An increased flow of energy along your nerves can cause excessive contraction of muscles we call spasms, increased flow of fluids we call inflammation, heightened pain sensation, increased heart rate and blood pressure, increased release of adrenalin, increased motility in the G.I. system, constriction of the airways in the lungs, increased urinary function, excessive menstruation, excessive sweating, and on, and on, and on.

The point is that any change in function above or below what is needed in order to adapt to the environment at any given moment causes problems. Notice I did not say that any change from normal causes problems. That is because normal is not only different for everyone, it is constantly different for YOU. This is a very important distinction to make; "average" is a range of numbers that fits the majority of the population most of the time. But "normal" is defined as whatever is necessary for you to return to or maintain your natural state of ease. THERE IS A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NORMAL AND AVERAGE!

The problem is that we have learned to call adjustments our bodies make to the environment problems if they are outside of the accepted average. If our bodies attempt to detoxify through vomiting or diarrhea, or if our temperature goes above a certain accepted number, we say we are sick. It may in fact be true that because of a loss of connection, our bodies are not functioning normally when these things occur, but it is also very likely that these things are exactly what we need to happen in order to get and stay well.

The key is this; we can't know exactly what is necessary for our bodies at any given moment with any degree of accuracy, no matter how much schooling we have had, no matter which tests are run, and no matter how good our intentions may be. But the good news is that we don't have to!!! The truth is that we have an inborn intelligence that knows EXACTLY what we need, every single moment of our lives - AS LONG AS THERE IS A CLEAR NEUROLOGICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN OUR BRAINS AND OUR BODIES. This clear connection allows our innate intelligence to comprehend and respond to everything in our internal and external environments perfectly, and allows us to function the way we were designed - with EASE! But it also allows us to do one other allows us to TRUST our bodies, and know that whatever is happening, it is supposed to be that way.
