The Freight Train: A Simple Metaphor to Explain the Process of Healing

Every once in awhile, a practice member will ask me when a certain symptom or complaint will begin to resolve. Even though they understand that they are here to facilitate the process of healing and growing over the process of dying, they still have some concerns for when they will begin to feel better. I would like to answer this by first reminding you that everything in life is a process. This includes both the process of growing (healing) and the process of dying. And, all processes require time. I would like to answer the question more specifically with a metaphor called "The Freight Train."

Let's pretend you are traveling in a freight train at 60 miles per hour, when suddenly you realize you have been going in the wrong direction. Coming to a conscious awareness of this fact is the first important step in changing it, but concrete action steps are still required to do something about changing your situation. Because your movement is a process that has some momentum, it is impossible to change your direction immediately. The first thing you need to do is stop going the wrong way. The best way to do this is to apply a positive force in the form of the brake. This slows the train over time, and eventually stops your momentum in the wrong direction.

Next, you reverse your force so that you are actually producing what you want (to go in the opposite direction). Slowly at first, then with increasing speed, you begin to travel back in the direction you came from.

After a while, you reach the place where you first realized you were going the wrong way.

Then you continue past that point until you reach the place where you started going the wrong way.

Finally, you come to where you ultimately wanted to be in the first place.

When you began your care here, you were going in a specific direction. This direction was very likely opposite to what you desired. In the freight train example, you would have been moving toward sickness, aging, and death. We have begun applying a positive force to move you in the direction you want to go. This positive force is in the form of the chiropractic adjustment, which increases the expression of your innate intelligence (Life Energy) by restoring alignment and function in your spine and re-establishing the connection and communication between your brain and all the cells of your body.

Just like our train, the first thing that must happen is a slowing down and stopping of the momentum in the wrong direction. We identify this as an increased ability to adapt to all of the physical, chemical and mental stresses you encounter each day. Only then can a reversal (healing) occur and begin moving you in the right direction, toward growth and the full expression of health and Life!

The thing to get from this story is that everything is a process. You have begun the process of moving toward what you want, but it will take time to see some of the specific results you are hoping for.

One last thing, just like that freight train, as long as you keep applying a positive force in the direction you want to go, you will eventually go far past the point where your sickness process began and move toward bigger and brighter horizons than you may have been able to even imagine before. You see, like everything else in life, your health development is a continual process. And as such, there is no "final destination!"

Chiropractic and Blood Pressure

There have been several studies over the years (two recently, including one at the University of Chicago Medical School) that talk about the chiropractic adjustment's ability to lower blood pressure in hypertensive (high blood pressure) patients. You might think that as a chiropractor these kinds of studies make me very happy.

While I am happy that chiropractic is getting some positive press, I am actually quite disturbed by these kinds of studies that show chiropractic to be a treatment (alternative or otherwise) for any kind of disease. The problem I have with these studies is that there is an underlying assumption that the particular symptom being focused upon (i.e., high blood pressure) is something gone WRONG in that person.

You may be thinking, "But high blood pressure IS something gone wrong!" This is where we need to talk about the words NORMAL and AVERAGE.

Is it possible that the reason someone has a blood pressure outside the AVERAGE is that the innate intelligence of the body is trying to accomplish something by raising or lowering it? What if as a person gets older and is less active, his leg muscles lose some of their strength and ability to contract normally, making it harder for his heart to pump blood against gravity and fully oxygenate his brain? Might the innate intelligence of his body RAISE his blood pressure above AVERAGE to ensure NORMAL oxygenation of his brain? Might taking medicines to artificially LOWER his blood pressure actually decrease the amount of oxygen to his brain and cause mental problems such as Alzheimer's disease or something similar?

On a related note, might his innate intelligence lay down a greater than AVERAGE amount of cholesterol in his arteries in order to more easily and efficiently raise his blood pressure in response to his increased need for oxygen? Decreased blood flow to any specific area of your body may cause an overall increase in your blood pressure in the same way.

The truth is that there are really only three reasons why you might have a blood pressure that is outside of the AVERAGE range.

1) Your focus and/or poor lifestyle choices keep your body and mind in a survival state that REQUIRES a higher than AVERAGE blood pressure to survive the day. This is a CORRECT response to a bad circumstance.

2) Your innate intelligence is CORRECTLY attempting to compensate for a specific problem somewhere in your body and may need to raise or lower it (this may also be due to a lifestyle choice).

3) Your innate intelligence is unable to fully comprehend and/or respond to what your body needs due to neurological interference (i.e., subluxation) and has therefore INCORRECTLY altered your blood pressure.

In the cases where people's blood pressures went down after their adjustments, they obviously just needed a clearer neurological connection so that their innate intelligence could more accurately regulate their blood pressure. The adjustments gave them that clearer connection.

An interesting finding in many of these studies was that several subjects actually had an increase in their blood pressure occur after chiropractic care. This baffled the researchers, but if we understand again that a CLEAR NEUROLOGICAL CONNECTION is required in order for innate intelligence to correctly raise your blood pressure if necessary (see #1 and #2 above), then it is very easy to see that once these people were reconnected by an adjustment, the CORRECT response in their blood pressure occurred automatically!

Basically what it all comes down to is this. You have an amazing inborn wisdom that knows exactly what YOUR blood pressure needs to be in every moment. This is your NORMAL blood pressure whether it is the AVERAGE for the population or not. But in order for you to maintain YOUR normal blood pressure, you MUST have a healthy lifestyle, a positive mental focus and above all, a CLEAR NEUROLOGICAL CONNECTION! Seeing your chiropractor regularly allows you to KNOW you are neurologically clear and TRUST that your innate intelligence is always doing the right thing in order to keep YOU functioning, adapting, healing and growing perfectly. Then you can relax and celebrate all that you are and all that you can yet be!

A Possible Explanation For Why Some People Don't 'Get It'

One of the most frustrating daily events in my office is people telling me that they have been trying to refer someone they know to the office, but they find that the person has not taken the necessary action step to come in.

I guess it's really about the failure of people to grasp the "big idea" of chiropractic. A few people like most of my practice members seem to "get it," but the majority of people out there that you are trying to refer to the office are still stuck in the paradigm of chiropractic being something solely for back and neck pain relief.

What could be an explanation of why some people don't get the big idea?

The answer is that they may suffer from a state known as "healthlessness."

Health"less"ness: (noun)

1) a state or condition of unhealth and a belief that you are healthy when you are not. This mistaken belief includes ideas like if you feel fine you must be healthy, or that a bit of "sickness" is normal, like the normal everyday headache.

2) a profound state of psychosis or trance-like state that displays an uncaring attitude and behavior towards others including: extreme resistance to procedures, recommendations or patient education materials, it may also include polluting one's environment, violence, intolerance of other's beliefs, inequality and oppression based on heritage, skin color or ethnic background, lack of parenting ability and commitment, and geared heavily toward self-gain

3) a state of profound ego-driven confusion that believes in disease rather than health; not only do they have an extreme aversion to health education, they create the predicament of the species or all the below-the-line wretched conditions the world finds itself in.

As you can see from the definition, you are going to incur resistance about chiropractic from people suffering from this condition or state. No wonder they have so much difficulty being educated and empowered. They already believe they're healthy. You may be trying to help them, but they are like a delusional person that thinks that a chiropractor is only good for strains and sprains of the neck and back. Anything outside of that paradigm causes them to shut down and become evasive, resistant, and uncooperative.

Think of the impact healthlessness has on society. It is akin to wearing dark sunglasses all day long. Even in brilliant sunlight it appears to the person suffering from healthlessness that it's a cloudy day.

Consider a parent attempting to nurture and raise a child in today's complicated world. Every decision is compromised and complicated because of the tone of the parent's sunglasses.  In this case, the darkened paradigm is the complete acceptance and embrace of children's health challenges today - Autism, allergies, asthma, anxiety, autoimmune diseases and those are just some of the A's. We have 25 letters to go. While these health issues may be common, they are not normal and should not be accepted or embraced.

Instead of solutions, people with healthlessness cling to conditions, diagnoses, and institutions that reinforce and make it socially acceptable to be sick. Think of the support clubs that actually promote the actual disease or illness that the members say they want help with.

Imagine belonging to a group that has a belief in the condition or disease and not the solution. It would be like joining a group to become wealthy and the group was comprised of people who were broke and only gave lip service to the thought of being wealthy while taking no action to improve their finances. If you brought this to the attention of the group, sparks would fly.

This is the law of healthlessness. People will listen, however they won't act because the condition is invisible to them. They want to believe, but they don't have the staying power or the discipline to keep away from the dark allure of disease, limitations, and lack.

What's the solution for this societal belief in disease? The answer should not surprise you. It's even more discussions and education towards health and away from disease.

A solution to healthlessness is chiropractic and YOU. We who have experienced the benefit of regular chiropractic care must convey health in our discussions about chiropractic. Our goal should be to remind people that health is the presence of normal body function and the full expression of our innate intelligence, while disease is an absence of normal body function and a decreased expression of innate intelligence. Show people that they cannot have true health and subluxations. They will have to pick one. Be an example they can look to.

We should also be aiming to change the healthlessness paradigm to a health paradigm. We need to be focusing our discussions on enhancing health and not on treating disease, because when we do we unknowingly reinforce their psychotic state. They will then find it harder and harder to grasp the concept of health. Their belief in disease grows to epidemic proportions.

Society is waiting to learn the role of the nerve system in health and disease. Haven't they waited long enough? It's up to us to lead the way to health. Become a health leader in your community today. Talk to people about chiropractic. Try to reach 1-7 people a week with the message. It is not as hard as it sounds. Share my newsletters, Monday Morning Motivations, my PowerPoint shows, and anything else on my website. If you need help in any way, let me know. Let's snap people out of healthlessness and just make them truly healthy.
