Health Care: What Ever Happened to Personal Responsibility?

My Thoughts On This Issue...

So Let Me Get This Straight ... This health care plan will be written by a committee whose head says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it and whose members will be exempt from it, signed by a president who smokes, funded by a treasury chief who did not pay his taxes, overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that is dead broke...

What could possibly go wrong?

**Please note: This is not meant to be political or to offend anyone. I've just been asked about this topic so often that I'd thought it would be a good idea to write it down. I also very much look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments.**

Unless you've been under a rock for the last few months, you've heard politician after politician speaking about the issues of health care. While Obama says health care is an important item on his agenda, I beg to differ. Now don't get me wrong, I think his and many others' intentions are good. However, there's a lack of understanding around how this universe works.

If you're familiar at all with the Law of Attraction, you should know by now that "energy flows where attention goes." Notice where the attention is focused in most (if not all) conversations regarding "health care". Pay attention, and you'll quickly realize the conversations are NOT focused on health at all: They're focused on addressing sickness.

All the hoopla regarding death panels, rationing, and discontinuing Medicare is the conversation about what to do with people who are sick. Do we let them die or live? Are they worth saving or not? Is this a conversation about health? I think not.

THE STUDY OF HOW TO ADDRESS SICKNESS IS NOT AN ADVOCACY, NOR A SOLUTION, FOR HEALTH.

My wife and I pay a pretty penny already for our health insurance that rarely if ever gets used. At the same time, we spend a small fortune (outside of our insurance plan) on proactive health-sustaining solutions such as nutritional supplementation, gym membership, organic foods, and much more. All of which our "health" insurance refuses to pay. My insurance company is laughing all the way to the bank.

Banks and automotive companies that ran their businesses irresponsibly were bailed out with little accountability or with few constructs being put in place. In other words, "You screwed up, but you're not responsible or being held accountable." I don't know about you, but if I make poor financial decisions in my personal life or business, I've never found anyone (much less the government) ready to bail me out. I currently have pretty hefty student loan and mortgage bills, and I'm pretty sure they're not going to let me off.

And now, we're consumed with sick care. I'm not too excited to pay for a lung cancer case obtained by smoking two packs of Marlboros per day. What part of "smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer" is unclear?

Likewise, I'm not excited to pay for triple bypass for a person who's spent a lifetime eating burritos, Krispy Kreme, and Snickers, whose idea of a workout is clicking the remote on their television.

If I sound insensitive, I apologize. Those who know me know I'm very sensitive to the needs of others.

And please understand that needs and wants are not always the same thing and they are not rights either.

Sometimes true sensitivity and love is not continuing to enable individuals to continue with the behaviors that got them in a painful situation to begin with. I don't think many parents would allow their small children the opportunity to continually place their hands upon a hot stove.

I realize there are exceptions, but the rule is that smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer. Heart disease is the second biggest killer overall and I submit it's largely due to the inability to handle our emotions properly. (Ironically, medical care is the leading cause of death in this country.) We don't need more economic stimulus nearly as much as we need a mental and emotional stimulus.

And obesity quickly is approaching the number one cause of death in America. According to the CDC, about 300,000 people per year -- 25,000 per month, 5,769 per week, 821 per day, 34 per hour--die of obesity and obesity related problems.

While I care tremendously about the needs of others, I care enough to believe in the age old saying, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."

What we need in this world is to quit giving people fish, which enables them in the same disempowering behavior that got them in the predicament to begin with.

On this same issue of responsibility and cause versus effect, I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention that most welfare recipients in this country are second- and third-generation welfare recipients. Think about that. We need to incent and reward individuals to learn how to fish!

I'd love to see the Obama administration give an incentive to business owners to buy gym memberships for their team. Or what if we gave an incentive to the individual who took proactive measures to stay healthy?

I got my annual physical a few months ago, and my doctor told me that all my vitals and hormone levels are at the level of a 28 year old. I'm sure you're aware that my physical chronology is a decade more than that. But health is not about chronology.

Lest you think I boast or that I'm just lucky -- think again. Luck has nothing to do with it, and I'm not boastful...I'm grateful. I work to take care of the body the Creator has given me. Now I'm not anywhere near perfect. I could lose quite a few pounds, but I have not so much as taken an aspirin in over 15 years. My children age 10 and 7 don't know what a drug or a vaccine even looks like and only go to the pediatrician for school physicals. It's people like me and my family that keep the insurance companies in fat city.

What if we restructured insurance plans to pay for things that actually INCREASE health versus measures that address the effect of neglect?

Emerson stated, "Health is our greatest wealth." He's absolutely correct, yet so few focus on it until it's in jeopardy.

Since I'm not holding my breath that our governmental or collective societal focus is going to turn around all too quickly, let me give YOU some suggestions for taking personal responsibility that will pay off for YOU. Here are a few quick tips to add more years to your life and, more importantly, more life to your years. (I have a more detailed list is in a one page sheet called Keys to Healing and Growth let me know and I'll email it to you.)

Start a daily prayer/meditation practice. This can be as little as 5-20 minutes but research has proven the stress-relieving and health benefits. Not to mention, it's been proven to extend your life.

Have an empowering social network. If your friends are what I call "energy vampires," always having drama and complaints in their life and always focusing on the negative, you're going to get sucked in. Conversely, if you choose your friends wisely, invest time with those who are inspired by life and have a grand purpose to fulfill, you'll be more inspired as well.

Make your home a sanctuary. Your home should be filled with the things that make you feel peaceful, and it should create an environment that you can't wait to "come home" to.

Work out regularly. Do something for your cardiovascular health, your flexibility, as well as your strength at least 3-4 times per week. You'll feel better, look better and have more physical and mental stamina.

Eat to live, don't live to eat. While many foods available may taste good, their nutritional value often ranks right up there with cardboard. Keep your diet high in lean proteins, avoid red meat and fats and get plenty of greens. Greens are living foods filled with energy, and if you want to have high energy, you can't get too much of them.

Regular chiropractic care. A correctly aligned and functioning spine is necessary to maintain a clear neurological connection and the free flow of Life Energy in your body. Make getting your spine checked every week one of your top priorities! It is quite possibly the best thing you could do for your health. I get my spine checked twice a week and check my family almost every day

When we individually begin taking more personal responsibility for our own health and our own lives in every area, we feel more empowered, more inspired and alive and more in control. Transforming our government and our world begins with transforming our self.

That's how you and I change the world.

Health Care Before Insurance
Health care existed for thousands of years before insurance. Doctors charged fair fees that most people could afford. Churches, family members, friends, neighbors, and other charitable organizations helped out people that couldn't afford care. The market (consumers) helped dictate the price of health care. If the service was too expensive, people wouldn't use it. Almost no one ever went bankrupt from medical costs. Unlike today where almost 70% of all bankruptcies are due to healthcare costs even when people have insurance as the overwhelming majority of those do.

Today, in areas/procedures of health care where insurance isn't used, the price has gone down or has been made affordable. In procedures that insurance covers, the price has gone way up because doctors/hospitals will always charge the MOST they can get away with. There is no real competition in prices to see who is the most affordable. In fact, most of the employees at a doctors office would not know what to charge you if you just wanted to pay cash. These things are what have contributed to the high cost of health care. Insurance has been probably one of the biggest things that have caused the destruction of healthcare.

Why Insurance Is Not Accepted At My Office
I'm often questioned as to why I do not accept any health insurance or any other type of insurance or 3rd party pay at my office. If you don't already know, the main reasons as to why I do not are:

1. The standard and quality of care I provide is the highest I can possibly give you. Insurance companies are not willing to recognize that, nor will they pay for this high quality and quantity of care.

2. Insurance companies would require me to do procedures and tests that are not necessary for you to receive care at this office, wasting both your time and your money. My promise to you is that I will only do what is needed for you to receive care and refer you out to other doctors if you need anything more.

3. To accept insurance I would be required to compromise and limit my ability to provide the best care possible for you. I would be forced, in essence, to provide you with incompetent care. That is something I am not willing to do.

4. It has been shown that people who pay for their care on their own become healthier quicker and receive much more/better benefits from care. I want you to benefit as much as possible from the care I provide for you.

5. Many people are losing insurance coverage and/or their deductible and co-pays are too high to realistically serve them as they need. Since it is illegal to charge an insurance fee and have a lower cash fee, I would be forced to charge everyone the insurance fee and those that didn't have insurance would not afford care. I am unwilling to exclude anyone from the care they need.

6. Most insurance does not cover chiropractic care for children. Again, I am not willing to exclude the segment of the population that chiropractic care can benefit and impact the most. It is, and always will be, easier and less expensive to grow healthy children than to repair damaged adults.

7. Insurance was designed for quick, short-term symptom and disease care and treatment. Chiropractic's objective, as practice in this office, is about improving your health and helping to enhance all aspects of your life. Philosophically and clinically those two objectives are incompatible and it becomes a contradiction to try and change one objective to fit the other. And as we all know, contradictions can only lead to disaster.

For those reasons and more, I have chosen to not participate with any insurance. The great news is that by not having to deal with insurance companies, office costs are kept down, so I can offer everyone chiropractic care at fees that ALL people can afford.

The Honor Fee System is utilized in this office so everyone family can afford the care they need. This fee system allows you to set your fee for care. It helps to remove the obstacle of finances in the doctor-patient relationship and allows me to focus on the "service" aspect of health care. Basically, this fee system also allows me to focus on what is most important - YOU!

To wrap up this article, for those of you that still think government run health care is the way to go, I'll leave you with some insightful words I got from a colleague about other things government has got involved with.

Who To Trust With YOUR Health Care...
-The U.S. Postal Service was established in 1775 - they have had 234 years to get it right; it is broke.

-Social Security was established in 1935 - they have had 74 years to get it right; it is broke.

-Fannie Mae was established in 1938 - they have had 71 years to get it right; it is broke.

-War on Poverty started in 1964 - they have had 45 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to "the poor"; it hasn't worked.

-Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965 - they've had 44 years to get it right; they're broke. And Medicare cost over 700% more than projected by the politicians and policy makers back then. Think about how much Obama's plan will really cost.

-Freddie Mac was established in 1970 - they have had 39 years to get it right; it is broke.

-Trillions of dollars in the massive political payoff called the TARP bill of 2009 shows NO sign of working.

-To set a new record..."Cash for Clunkers" was established in 2009 and went broke in 2009! It took good dependable cars (that were the best some people could afford) replaced them with high priced (people who couldn't afford to are now making payments) mostly Japanese models so a good percentage of the profits from the sales went out of the country.

-And lastly, the American taxpayers are now going to be dinged with paying for yet 3 billion more dollars of our governments experiments to make our wallets even thinner.

So with a perfect 100% failure rate, you want us to believe you can be trusted with a government-run health care system? 15% of our economy?

I think not ... the power is and should be with the people. I trust the people can make the right decision. Clearly the politicians can't.

It's Just a Spasm

"There you go, your Power's on full blast again!" Andy got up off the table slowly because of his back pain. He looked at me and asked the following question, "Hey Doc, I have a tube of lotion at home called 'Biofreeze' I got from a different chiropractor years ago. Would it be a good idea to use that on the muscle spasms in my back?"

"What's it called?" I asked him. "Biofreeze," he repeated.  "Well," I answered, "let's see... Do you know what the prefix BIO means, Andy?" He looked at me and answered, "Life?" "That's right! Now, what does the word FREEZE mean?"

"Ummmm...cold?" Andy responded, not sure where I was going with this. "Well, actually it means STOP - you see, when something freezes, the movement of its molecules significantly slows down or even stops." "OK," he said, still bewildered.

"What did I say to you when you got off the table just now?" I asked him. "POWER'S ON!" "That's right!" I responded, "What do you think I mean by that?" "Well, I guess it means my energy - my power is turned on again," he said. "OK," I continued, "So I just turned your Life Power back on, and now you want to know if you should go home and use a product whose name literally means LIFE STOP - Do I have that right?" Andy laughed and said good-bye.

What Andy did not realize (like most people) is that no part of the body (including a muscle) ever acts on its own. The only way it can act is by receiving a message from your innate intelligence through your brain, spinal cord and the rest of your nerve system. This means that specifically "treating" a muscle (or any other body part for that matter) is simply addressing effect, rather than cause. Let's take a look then at why a muscle might go into an involuntary sustained contraction, or what we call a "spasm." There are a few primary and several secondary reasons why this may happen.

1. PROTECTIVE/HEALING SPASM - If a muscle is injured, it may contract to keep from being passively stretched and injured further. It is actually protective in this way. In addition, the spasm increases the metabolism in the muscle, increases circulation and speeds healing.
2. TOXIC SPASM
- If there is a build up of toxic substances in a muscle (like lactic acid after a workout, or if a foreign substance has been injected into the muscle), it may go into spasm to increase the metabolism and circulation in order to more quickly clear the toxin.

3. COMPENSATORY SPASM - Here are several examples of these;
A. PROTECTIVE SPASM - A muscle may spasm to restrict movement in an injured or inflamed joint so that it is not as easily irritated and to speed healing.
B. REFLEX SPASM - This is another form of protective spasm.
C. NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY SPASM - An example of this might be a calcium deficiency that causes nighttime cramping in the legs.
D. NEUROLOGICAL SPASM - Subluxation (Loss of alignment or function in your spine causing a partial disconnection between your brain and body) may cause an abnormal amount of mental impulse to be sent to the muscle and it may go into spasm.
E. BALANCING SPASM - This spasm is to compensate for a structural imbalance (like an anatomically short leg on one side) or a muscle weakness somewhere else. The primary weakness may be due to disuse, healing from injury/surgery or possibly because of altered mental impulse caused by subluxation.

Whenever you attempt to reduce or remove a primary muscle spasm, whether through medications, creams, ice, heat, stretching, physiotherapy or any other means, I would like to know one thing - Which of these primary healing and protective mechanisms are you attempting to stop - and WHY? If it is a compensatory spasm you are addressing, why are you bothering? Just take care of the primary problem and the spasm will disappear on its own!

Instead of trying to second guess your innate intelligence, why not just remove the CAUSE of the spasm and allow this intelligence to release the spasm at the right time and in the right amount, while always providing and allowing the proper amount of protection?

You see contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as "just a spasm!" Your body's Innate Wisdom knows when it needs to send a muscle into spasm. This also means it knows when and how to release that spasm - BUT THERE MUST BE AN OPEN LINE OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE BRAIN AND BODY FOR THAT TO OCCUR!

Getting checked and adjusted if necessary on a regular basis ensures that your nerve system is free and clear to transmit any and all incoming and outgoing messages between the brain and the body.

There is another thing to consider here as well. As your constructive and healing Life Force is once again liberated with an adjustment, it will heal whatever most needs to heal NEXT in order for your WHOLE BODY to move to the next level of wholeness. This may be the muscle that is in spasm or it may be something else. If you do not trust that this is true and you apply some kind of "treatment" to the muscle, you will direct the healing forces to go where YOU believe they most need to go (i.e., the muscle) and actually INTERFERE with what your body's Innate Wisdom is trying to accomplish OVERALL during the healing process. This may in fact bring relief of symptoms, but what harm has it done in the long run?

The point of this article is not to turn you into a physiologist, but to help you see the incredible miracle that you have inside of you - your Innate Life Force! People are always telling me about the miracles they have seen once they are under chiropractic care. Please allow me to share one I experienced myself just this morning.

I had some honey granola cereal with walnuts and coffee for breakfast this morning. Do you know what has happened to them by now? Well, I don't know EXACTLY what has happened to them, but it is entirely possible that they are becoming new spleen tissue right now or maybe new eye cells - How exciting! This is a miracle! EVERYTHING that happens in your body is a miracle - not just the "big" things - and it's all because of the incredible Perfection that has been placed within you.

You may ask why other chiropractors apply treatments to reduce or eliminate muscle spasms. I cannot speak for them. All I know is that I have a saying in the office -

ADJUST IT AND TRUST IT!

I trust that with me freeing your innate intelligence through your adjustments, and with you living a health creating lifestyle and keeping a positive focus, whatever needs to happen will in fact happen at the right time and in the right way as LIFE FREELY FLOWS! And I certainly would NEVER consider having you use a product called "Life-Stop!"
